Beverly Micucci's extraordinary "Daphne in Paris." She also had an altered book, "Ooh La La" with a Paris theme but no paper doll...I might have conflated the two in this post. 

Alina Kolluri and I took turns holding the book open for photographs.

One of my favorite categories, although the brittle nature of newspaper makes it a tough one to collect; it can fall to pieces in your hand! This group has been nicely preserved. From the collection of Sharon Yarter.

Shirley Temple auction results

It was exciting to watch the auction go until 12:30 a.m. or so. Did anyone get a bargain? Some paper memorabilia -- menus, signed photos by other stars -- went for under $500. Some dolls did not exceed their estimates or opening bids by much. You can see all the results here.

Here were some of the highlights for me: 

The dress from "Stand Up and Cheer" (1934), was the top item, going for $75,000.

This compo doll with a custom-made dress created by Fox studio costume designers using remnants of fabric and trim from Shirley's outfit in "Little Miss Broadway" (1938), was the top bid for a doll, going for $19,000.

The Lenci doll known as Pinkie, which started Shirley's collection, went for $14,000.

There was spirited bidding late at night for Emily, the doll of Sara Crewe in "The Little Princess" (1939). Winning bid: $10,500.

These five paper doll books from Shirley's personal collection went for $1,600.

Mary McLeod Bethune was born July 10, 1875 in Mayesville S.C. She was an educator and founder of the National Council of Negro Women in 1935.

I loved seeing the Wednesday tours, which I could not make. I'm sorry I missed the house tour with the colorful glass displays and the Hunter Museum of Art (and that very cool Art-O-Mat), but Anne has some wonderful photos of it all.
