2017 PAPER DOLL CONVENTION Email #1

This is the first convention in recent years without our beloved Garth Lax and his traditional email blasts. He and his wife Diana were among the earliest supporters of paper doll collectors and conventions -- and among the most generous and knowledgeable collectors.  In homage to Garth, we're updating his email blasts from the 2011 paper doll convention in Philadelphia -- that's his voice you'll hear, most of the time.  Kwei-lin Lum is helping us update the information about museums, restaurants and other sites.

2017  INTERNATIONAL PAPER DOLL CONVENTION

                          The Swinging ‘60s!

                                INTRODUCTION

Over the next few months, the 2017 International Paper Doll Convention
will issue a series of emails designed to make your 2017 Convention
experience the best ever. Not only will we tell you what to expect at the
Convention, but also we'll outline a wonderful set of venues and events
that can make your Convention an even more memorable occasion.

The Convention will run from Wednesday, August 9 to Sunday, August 13,
at the Embassy Suites - Philadelphia Airport, 9000 Bartram Avenue
Philadelphia, PA 19153.

For those of you who may be wondering, the hotel is right at the
Philadelphia Airport, and there's a light rail metro link from the
Airport to the heart of Philadelphia. In addition to having the
Convention at an Embassy Suites, a highly desirable hotel for most
paper doll folks (excellent Convention rates, spacious rooms, free
cooked-to-order breakfast each morning, free manager's reception
each evening), this particular Embassy Suites is easy to access from I-95.
Many of you, particularly from the East, will be able to get to Philadelphia
easily by car and arrive at the Embassy Suites without hardly looking at a map.

For those who will fly in, your airport will be Philadelphia International
(code PHL). Philadelphia International is a MAJOR airport that is served
by many U.S. and international airlines. Once you're at the airport, there
is ground transportation that will take you right to Embassy Suites.
Later in the series, we'll tell you more about the ground transportation
and the metro link to downtown.

Most venues that we describe will be within a 90-minute drive from the
Convention site. And in fact the Embassy Suites has agreed to give
you the special Convention rate for three days prior and three days
after the Convention!

Michael McClernon is the man to contact at the Embassy Suites
for any help you may need securing the correct convention rate.
You can call him at (215) 796-6001 or at michael.mcclernon@hilton.com

We'll tell you some things about the Convention - - the types of wonderful
Presentations and Workshops that are planned; the exciting Artists
Gallery; last year’s big hit, the Show and Share; what the schedule of events looks like;
details about the Competition; and a tantalizing preview of the souvenirs.
Will there be more? Yes, indeed!

If you're currently undecided about coming to Philadelphia in 2017, or even
if you're leaning toward actually skipping the Convention, you may want to print
the emails, or store them in a Computer folder. After receiving a few of the emails,
we think that you'll be reaching for that Registration Form!

There's Paper Doll excitement in the air, and you'll definitely want to be part of it!

Jack and Jill, February 1940

Ann Eshner's charming cover for Valentine's Day 1940.  The paper doll was long gone when I found it in an antique store. Old magazines are one of my favorite ways to unwind and escape the busy world.
