Tiny in TinyTown cutouts, 1915
From The Delineator magazine. Above, Grocery Store and Schoolhouse, August 1915; below, The Globe Department Store, October 1915. Joan Homann's guide to Magazine Paper Dolls helped me to identify the magazine and exact date of these TinyTown cutouts. You can order your copy here.

The Magic Circus by Violet Moore Higgins, 1917
This author and artist is new to me. But a simple search online revealed that Higgins (1886-1967) has a fabulous oeuvre, in addition to this lovely book of cut-outs which graced the Competition room at the convention.
Higgins was a prolific author and illustrator. Here are some images of her work found in a Google search:
She took over the illustration of a comic strip called Drowsy Dick. Thanks to Allan Holtz of the blog "The Stripper's Guide" for posting this full length comic strip with some background on Higgins.
And Ms. Higgins did covers for The Saturday Evening Post. One hundred years ago, her illustration of "The Young Suffragette" appeared on the cover.

The Boston Sunday Globe, 1895
I bet a lot of Boston is busting its buttons with pride today.
This is one of my favorite collectibles: The "Art Fashion Supplement" of the Boston Sunday Globe. Plus, it's a newspaper theme, which I love. The globe had the largest circulation in New England, Aug. 11, 1895, and probably enjoyed that status for a very long time. The Boston Herald probably ran a close second, and of course had that fabulous Boston Herald Lady to ramp up the numbers and its popularity.

Baseball cards
No, I do not own the legendary Honus Wagner card. I took this picture at the exhibit of Jefferson Burdick's legendary collection at the Metropolitan Museum this summer -- it's still up, through Dec. 1, and well worth the visit.
Here's Dan Barry's excellent (and humorous) take on the collection.
I thought the playoff season would be a good time to post some of the cards.

Vintage gift wrap
A recent find in the village of Cold Spring, N.Y.
Louise Leek and Jayne Keller devoted the latest issue of Greetings to paper doll gift wrap. The newsletter is black-and-white, 32 pages, and usually focuses on paper doll greeting cards. It's likely this issue is the first compilation of paper doll gift wrap paper.
Greetings is published in April and October. Subscriptions are $7 a year U.S., slightly higher overseas.
Send check to: Louise Leek, 10158 Lady Catherine St., Streetsboro, Ohio, 44241.

2014 INTERNATIONAL PAPER DOLL CONVENTION
RENDEZVOUS IN RICHMOND
!
Email #1
INTRODUCTION
It's October of 2013, but the 2014 International Paper Doll Convention is
only 35 weeks away and it will be upon you before you notice.
Over the next few months, the 2014 Richmond Paper Doll Convention
will issue a series of emails that will tell you
about the fabulous
Convention to come, and give you all sorts of information that will make
your 2014 Convention experience one that is brimming with memories.
Not only
will we tell you what to expect at the Convention, but also
we'll outline a wonderful set of venues and events that will help you
to make your Convention an even more memorable occasion.
The Convention will run from Wednesday, June 25 to Sunday, June 29.
It will be held at the Sheraton Four Points Hotel,
4700 South Laburnum Avenue, Richmond, Virginia 23231.
The telephone number is 1-804-226-4300.
The Sheraton Four Points is a true first class hotel that is situated
perfectly for Convention attendees, and is offering a wonderful rate
of $92.00 USD per night.
The great rate includes breakfast each morning, and free parking
(which is becoming a rarity at major hotels). You'll also enjoy the
fully-equipped fitness center, and the refreshing indoor pool.
In addition to the breakfast that you'll get with your room, you'll receive
three Banquet meals as part of your Convention Registration, plus a
refreshment buffet on the Wednesday night. You won't have to leave
the Hotel for anything (nor would you wish to) because from the time
you check in to the time you check out, you 'll be up to your shoulders
in Paper Dolls, Paper Doll seminars, Paper Doll artists, and wonderful
paper doll FUN !!
The rooms feature 37-inch, flat-panel HDTVs, pillowtop mattresses,
cozy cotton bedding, free Wi-Fi. hook-ups for all your electronic gadgets,
plus a large desk and ergonomic chair. For any extra meals or
snacking, there's the Terra Nova Grille that serves all three meals every day.
For the end-of-day gathering and socializing that Paper Doll people
so enjoy at Conventions, there's the Lobby Lounge where folks will
gather to chat and talk paper dolls.
Getting to Richmond is easy; the City is served by major U.S. Airlines
including Air Tran, American, Delta, Jet Blue, United, and US Airways.
The Hotel is just north of Richmond
International Airport (RIC),
and the Hotel provides a free shuttle to whisk you both ways
between your Airport terminal and the Hotel.
For those who will drive, the hotel is accessed easily from the
west and east by I-64 (there's an exit right at South Laburnum Avenue,
and from the north and south by I-95/I-295 to I-64.
By the way, the Convention folks suggest that you plan to arrive
on the Wednesday in order to be able to participate in everything.
I'll give you more information as it becomes available.
In the meantime, keep their suggestion in mind.
In the Convention email
series, we're going to tell you of great spots
to visit in Richmond and the Greater Richmond area. For that spouse or
friend who has minimal interest in a Paper Doll Convention, we'll tempt
that person with special venues that they'll find greatly appealing while
you're at the Convention June 25 - June 29. Since the following week is
a 4-day week in the U.S. because of the Independence
Day holiday,
you have the perfect opportunity to take some extra time to enjoy
one of the great historic and cultural areas of the U.S.
All venues that we describe will be within 90 minutes from the
Convention site. While you must stay at the Convention Hotel
June 25 - June 29, there's no reason why you can't stay at
lodgings closer to your points of particular interest for the pre- or post-
Convention days (although the Sheraton has agreed to give you the
Convention rate for 3 days before and 3 days after the Convention).
We'll tell you about the fabulous and diverse sights that you may enjoy
- - from some of the great art Museums (including one with a great
collection of costume and textile items), to the key Antiquing areas,
to venues steeped in the history of the US Revolutionary War and
the US Civil War. We'll tell you of a wonderful old church with
stained glass windows by Tiffany, and a lovely repertory theater
where you can have dinner and enjoy a show in a 1733 tavern.
We'll point out a famous 1895 Hotel with a lobby that will
knock your eyes out and a magnificent staircase that you'll swear that
you've seen in a famous 1939 film! We'll tell you about places in
the vicinity - - plantations and Williamsburg to the east - - homes
of Presidents and a stunningly beautiful University to the West
- - to the north, Colonial Homes, and battlefields that are a
"must see" for every Civil War buff.
And we'll tell you some things about the Convention - - the types of
Workshops that are planned, what the schedule of events looks like,
even a hint about the Programs and the souvenirs if we can pry the
information loose. A new email will be sent every other Friday,
with a break over the
Christmas Holidays. If you're currently undecided
about coming to Virginia in 2014, or even if you're leaning toward
actually skipping the Convention, you may want to print the emails,
or store them in a Computer folder. After receiving a few of the emails,
we think that you'll be reaching for that Registration Form!
By the way, in the Registration Form below, note the advance
Registration discount that ends in only 3
weeks.
