Nan C. Moorehead's 2013 Sales List #1
UPDATE: You can see the April 2013 discount list by clicking here.
Nan's first sales list of 2013. Nan has some wonderful goodies, including more Wilma Goss items. Each list is color- coded, and this one is a deep purple, which I faded to black and white for easier viewing and printing out.
Don't forget to call Nan before sending any money, to make sure the item is still available. And note the time difference: She's in the state of Washington.
Nan has some excellent discounted items from previous lists. Check out her Pink List and Yellow List.
Here's the newest list; click on each image to read large. The first page is her letter to collectors. (And yes Nan, we love scraps!)

Dick Whittington and His Cat
"Do not grieve Dear Master!" c. 1920.
You can see why I had to have this when I found it in Paula Hill's shop. I imagine the kitty has a deep sonorous voice.
I think this is a bookplate with a scene from Dick Whittington and his Cat.

American Indian Wedgwood
There is a room in Paula Hill's remarkable house with a lovely display of sage green Wedgwood depicting Native Americans. Did I miss it on previous visits? Or was it newly displayed? It is one of the most beautiful collections I've ever seen.
The beaded buffalo that Carol was holding in yesterday's picture.
A spectacular dream-catcher on the door.

Paula Hill's Open House, 2013
The annual Christmas and birthday celebration at Paula Hill's was as spectacular as ever. Wonderful people, trays of delicious food and desserts (does anyone use the term "groaning board" anymore?) and Paula's amazing house, decorated in the true spirit of the season, with beloved items, old and new.
Ready for his close-up.
Dear friends...
Carol Sullivan, Carol Carey and Karen Ham
In the picture, thanks Carol S.! Carol C. is holding a beaded buffalo.
A handmade angel.
A Russian doll.
You can see pictures of Paula Hill's annual open house in past years by clicking here. You might recognize some of the dolls in this post from my previous visits.

Nestle Poupee, c. 1910
Last Sunday was Paula Hill's annual Christmas/birthday party. Paula, her husband Blaine and their son Zandor open up their wonderful historic home (it was a 19th century one-room schoolhouse) to friends, and the salesroom in the basement is always filled with treasures. I came home with this beauty, a Nestle advertising paper doll c. 1910.

Bright April, 1946
This is a lovely book. I never read it as a child, but I read it over the last two weeks. Marguerite De Angeli weaves a sensitive story that touches on race, history, changing neighborhoods, and a young girl coming to understand, and really see the world, including the natural world, around her. April Bright is 9 going on 10, a special time for a girl, I think. (That's when I started to write in earnest, so I am fond of that age.)
De Angeli is credited with being the first children's author to deal with racial prejudice, and she deftly conveys in very subtle ways how the Bright family is affected by and navigates the limitations imposed on them.
For instance, April's brother Tom who is always rattling drumsticks on any surface, falls in with a bad group of boys. When a police officer takes him home, it's because Tom's father is a postman, known in the neighborhood. That saves him from a worse fate. Her older brother Ken a serviceman overseas, laments in letters home that he is given the laundry detail, and hopes things "have improved back home," and that he will be able to find professional work. A young girl meets April at a Brownie gathering, and refuses to sit near April. Of course, they are good friends by the end of this short book.
April's best friend is Sophie, a Jewish girl, which gives De Angeli an opportunity to talk about Jewish culture and history briefly, too. There is a lot of information in this book, but it is seamless, one scene flowing naturally into the next.
Tattered and Lost has more information about this wonderful writer and artist, and posted pictures of her 1939 work, "Skippack School."
The "Bright April" illustrations are delightful. I was reminded of Louise Fitzhugh, the author/illustrator of "Harriet the Spy," another book about a 9-year-old girl observing the world around her, and coming into focus herself.
For all the bright Aprils to come...

Convention Update: Antiques
Garth Lax on antiquing in the host city, Los Angeles:
2013 INTERNATIONAL PAPER DOLL CONVENTION
WAY OUT WEST !
Email #2
ANTIQUING !!
I'll bet that you thought that Antiquing in the Los Angeles area was an
lost cause because a Southern California "antique" is anything made
before 2008 !!
To the contrary. There are some excellent places for real Antique
treasure-hunting in the Los Angeles area, including some fine
Antique Malls. So - - let's take a look at some.
In the Mid-Wilshire/Fairfax area, there are 3 Antiquing venues.
Vintage Weave Interiors is set up as a French Flea Market, and is
outstanding for Parisian imports and farmhouse-style antiques.
They have everything French from, Brasserie hooks to wire baskets;
antique textiles, from pillows to tablecloths to aprons; antique
glassware, and even a snazzy Laguidle folding pocket knife.
Open Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday 11:30 AM to 5 PM.
They're at 7928 West 3rd Street in Los Angeles, about 12.4 miles
(20 minutes) from your Convention Hotel. Telephone:(323) 932-0451.
The Shine Gallery has thousands of never-used memorabilia items
from 1910 to the 1950s, including Howdy Doody and Kewpie dolls,
presidential buttons, and Disney memorabilia to name just a few.
While I wouldn't count on Paper Dolls at the Shine Gallery, they
have a lot of other vintage items!
They're at 6333 West 3rd Street, #134, Los Angeles.
The telephone number is (323) 954-4700. They're also 12.4 miles
(20 minutes) from your Convention Hotel.
It's open Monday-Friday 9 AM-9 PM, Saturday 9 AM-8 PM
Sunday 10 AM-7 PM.
The Melrose Trading Post is a Sunday Street Fair with some 250
vendors. It has a jazz band, a food court, and is very popular.
Located in the parking lot of the Fairfax High School at 7850 Melrose
Ave. in Los Angeles, it's 13 miles (21 minutes) from the Hotel.
It's open 9 AM to 5 PM on Sunday. Admission is $2.00 USD.
In the North Hollywood area ("NoHo"), the NoHo Antique Row has
5 shops that you may find interesting. Generally, they're open from
11 AM to 6 PM weekdays and Saturdays, but call ahead to be sure.
You'll find anything and everything in these shops, from Mid-century and
antique items to collectibles, from junk to jewels. If you love to browse
and poke, seeking that hitherto-unrecognized treasure, this is for you.
They're located near each other in the 5600-5700 blocks of
Lankershim Boulevard in Los Angeles, 27.9 miles (30 minutes)
from your Convention Hotel:
Cruz Antiques at 5616 Lankershim Blvd. Telephone (818) 762-1140.

On Ventura Boulevard you'll find a dandy Antique Mall.
It's the Sherman Oaks Antique Mall, and its 95 Dealers have a
wonderful mix of Victorian, Art Deco, china, toys, reference books,
kitsch, costume jewelry, and more. The Mall is open 7 days a week.
Monday-Saturday 11 AM - 6 PM. Sunday 12 noon to 5 PM.
It's located at 14034 Ventura Boulevard, Sherman Oaks, CA,
22.6 miles (25 minutes) from your Hotel. Telephone is (818) 906-0338.
In Whittier, CA, there's a super-duper Antique Mall.
It's King Richard's Antiques, and you'll love it !

across three floors, and is the largest Antique Mall in California.
The Dealers specialize in antique and period furniture, antique and
