I can't think of a better way to beat the winter blues than by catching up with David Wolfe on his new blog. Not only does he fill us in on his travels (such as to the Jamaica Flower Market in Mexico City), but he gives us his thoughts on recent museum exhibits, fashion trends, and new paper dolls, by him and other artists. He has a wonderful roundup of Christmas windows in New York City and London department stores.

Femme Fatales of Film Noir Paper Dolls by David Wolfe

David Wolfe nails the moody glamour that we associate with film noir, and gives us a fine overview of the genre. You never knew which side the noir femme fatale was playing, and that was more than half the fun. 

Who can forget Mary Astor's nervous little laugh in The Maltese Falcon, when Bogart tells her she's taking the fall? 

Another great scene: How the camera stays on Barbara Stanwyck's face in Double Indemnity, when Fred MacMurray murders her husband from the back seat of a car. I saw the play Billy and Ray a couple of months ago, about how Raymond Chandler and Billy Wilder worked together on the film script to evade the censors and keep the spirit of Chandler's book intact. It was a daring film for its time.

A Special Tribute to Larry Bassin

Louise Leek is hosting a paper doll party that will celebrate the work of Larry Bassin. It will be Saturday, May 17 at the Methodist Church in Streetsboro, Ohio. There will be sales, raffles, show-and- tell, and a program presented by Larry himself. Attendees will also receive a souvenir paper doll by Larry. There's a Dress-A-Doll to design for, too, but make sure you get the invitation from Louise so that you have the right size. I scanned this doll in and the size may be off.

The paper dolls are printed on shiny paper, with magnets attached to the back for play on a magnet board or fridge. Doreen will also offer paper versions, for those who like their paper dolls the old- fashioned way.

Paper Dolls With Military Stories To Tell

UPDATE:  I was really impressed that the reporter sought out Judy Johnson for a quote -- the reporter did her homework, and perhaps googled paper doll history and found Judy. However it happened, I'm glad Judy gave a historical perspective. And glad artist Pam DeLuco created this outstanding set.

This sounds like a wonderful project.  Artist Joan Son could use our support to make sure she has everything she needs to get it done. The city of Houston has granted her some funds, but she needs studio space and materials. Watch the video for the full story -- and an opportunity to share your own story, too.
