National Lampoon cut-outs, c. 1970s

 "Stuff to Make Playing With Your Food Even More Fun Than It Already Is."

Another great find at Verde Antiques and Rare Books. These pages from the National Lampoon were created by Michael O'Donoghue, the original head writer  for Saturday Night Live, who died way too young. I've always had a healthy regard for the power of humor and satire to make a political point. I loved the idea of Abbie Hoffman and the Yippies tossing dollar bills on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange back in the 1960s.

That was then. Too bad today's younger generation is so apolitical, placid, unassuming, unengaged and...uh, oh wait. Hello, kids!

Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow, c. 1910

A wonderfully busy commercial street. P & P Campbell Dyers and Cleaners, a dentist, and "New etchings by Cameron." A wild guess on the date. No bustle on the skirts, so I'm guessing 1910 or thereabouts. The clarity of the photo is quite nice: distinct cobblestone street, and the circular stairway on the streetcar, window lintels, shadows defining the cut of long skirts...

The card was never mailed, no stamp affixed, but was addressed to Nurse B. Donaldson at 250 Beufrerres (?) St.

"Printed at the works in Germany."
