Jane Arden, sportswoman, 1939

I posted this one three years ago, but couldn't resist reposting. (And couldn't find the Dolly Dingle paper doll with a tennis racket!) I can see the tennis and ice skating outfits, but less sure about the red suit and the outfit with one striped stocking. Hmmmm..... Maybe roller derby?

This paper doll is from an April 1939 newspaper, the year all hell broke loose in the world. Burt Bacharach was 11 years old. Hal David, who would one day become his lyricist, was 18. Maybe they were humming, "what the world needs now, is love, sweet love..."  They put it all together in 1965:

Click the Sepia Saturday logo (featuring Dinah Shore and Bacharach) for a nice return:

  1. I think the red outfit is her singing telegram outfit. She has a telegram in her hand ready for a song. But the one striped stocking? That's a total puzzle.

  2. Clever you, making all those links, and to have a paper doll with a tennis racket too! I’m sorry but I’d find it difficut to resist cutting that one out.

  3. The red outfit looks somewhat like what a car hop might wear. The yellow -- hmm, tango dancer?? I love how you connected the age of the paper doll to the age of Burt Bacharach and that great song.

  4. That striped stocking is curious, and quite forward looking for 1939.

  6. Singing telegram! That makes sense. I couldn't figure out that sheet in her hand and the little hat.

  7. Great old paper doll set. When I first saw the red outfit, it reminded me of a Lucky Strike cigarette girl. Enjoyed the video - love those songs from the sixties.

  8. All you needed to complete this was for the singer to be Dinah Shore.

  9. This is great! I had no idea with the outfit on the bottom, but roller derby makes sense.

    Thanks,

  10. At first the red outfit reminded me of a majorette or a cigarette girl, but the telegram and carhop seem to make more sense because of what she is holding.
