Q 112 Bus

This card brings back the time I was in my 20s living in New York and discovering--without blogs, Twitter, Facebook or the internet--artists and troublemakers. Stumbling on the avant garde, or just the eccentric. Exhibits like this. Elevating the mundane, celebrating the ordinary. Cities, the people, their stories.

Thanks to Sepia Saturday for prompting this time travel, and be sure to visit the site for links to many other wonderful photos and memories.

  1. Ah yes I remember a time pre-internet and blogging. We certainly did stumble upon the odd and quirky then, but now we can do it from the comfort of our own home. Thank you for sharing this one.

  2. An interesting postcard and an interesting idea for an exhibition.

  3. I was trying to imagine what multimedia meant back then, but it was probably not that different - just without computers. There are still quirky events out there, but people have to tear themselves away from Facebook to go to them.

  4. multimedia back then was having a slide show, audio or video going on, in addition to the photos or other items on display.

  5. Discovering a bus route? Now blogging lest us discover the world...

  6. We had buses back then; now we have one every two hours and none after 5pm. So evening events are often difficult to get too when you live out in the country. The internet only brings some events to you.

  7. It was more than just discovering a bus route, but about artists taking something common (a bus route), interviewing people who worked or traveled on the bus, that kind of thing. I was working with an oral history project back then, one of my first jobs out of college. Interviewing people who remembered when Queens was farmland, or who worked in factories long gone. So this kind of exhibit was in line with my interests at the time.

  9. I remember riding the bus to work in Los Angeles in the early 60s. What characters you would see! Nothing like being up close and personal. Much more face to face than Facebook.

  10. "The Exhibitionists" would have a very different meaning today! This is exactly the type program that I would likely attend. Love to quirky bits of local history.

this one looks like some of the buses we had here in Montreal, but repainted...

I don't think its run extended across the border though..

interesting what concept can come up starting with an unlikely idea.
