Over the next several weeks I'll be posting many of the Christmas cards and bridge tallies from the Chester Thorpe scrapbook. It's exciting to see how well these cards reflect the times (1925-26).
The top card is done in the John Held style that is so evocative of the Flapper, Art Deco and the 1920s--it's elegant and modern all at once. There's a joie de vivre about it, which of course is the spirit that we identify with the "roaring" twenties.
The bottom card shows how new and confounding the automobile still was at the time. Santa in a tin lizzy with all kinds of nuts and bolts falling out. An updated version would show Santa in a hybrid with a cellphone clipped to his ear.
