Author and paper doll collector Arabella Grayson has written an excellent essay about Hendricks' research into Sally Hemings, an enslaved woman of mixed race who belonged to Thomas Jefferson -- and bore him four children.

Thank you for sharing this. I did not know Donald Hendricks had passed. I own the Sally Hemings paper doll, which was purchased directly from Mr. Hendricks in approximately 2006. Hendricks and I communicated back and forth by email discussing the Hemings paper doll. It is featured on pages 344 and 345 of my book, Black Dolls: A Comprehensive Guide to Celebrating, Collecting, and Experiencing the Passion.
