These are very cool, I've never seen anything like them before. What is up with the Uncle Sam-looking guy with wings, smoking and resting his feet on an hourglass?! Angels are usually not portrayed with straw hats and cigars.
- Father Time takes a break to smoke and read the paper? - The ghost of Mark Twain was put in charge of timing something-or-other, but he'd rather read the paper?
I'm guessing that each illustration is a commentary on the nature of each newspaper...The NY Herald is patriotic, the Telegraph specializes in breaking news...I think you needed a lot of time to read the Times...those wings are bizarre tho...Puck was known for sharp satire...The Standard was perhaps the "official" newspaper for Great Britain...and Punch was whimsical...all guesses!
