Isn't it a shame the expressions that go through time because of the shutter speed back then. People all look a little the same. Always stern. Children are the only ones not able to stand still and show some life.
It's a mix of formality and fear that I see when I look at these pictures. There is a sameness to it--check out the old Coney Island card I posted a few weeks ago, with a man and I guess his daughter, looking pretty glum. In Coney Island, of all places!
