The New York City paper doll group lost one of its members, our dear friend, Joan Burke. Joan was a delightful companion at conventions and Morgantown and Paula Hill's party.
Joan and her mother were UFDC members for many years, and Joan had a lovely collection of vintage dolls, and also collected Star Wars memorabilia. Once Joan started collecting paper dolls, she was always game for dress-a-doll challenges. We had a lot of laughs together. I'll think of her whenever I read something about the Royal Family, or watch Miss Fisher's Mysteries -- she was a big fan of Great Britain, its history and culture. She attended St. Michael's Academy HS in Manhattan -- something we had in common! She worked for the telephone company and The Tablet, the newspaper of the Brooklyn Archdiocese. Her Catholic faith sustained her, and was an inspiration for me and others. Another thing we had in common: She lived in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, for many years, and I had an apartment around the corner from her house in the early 1980s! We must have crossed paths many times.
I will miss our Joanie very much.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday March 29 2017 at St. Anthony's Roman Catholic Church Greenpoint Brooklyn NY. Interment will follow in Linden Hill Cemetery Brooklyn NY.
